Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens review (with samples)

Canon’s newly released STM version of their 18-135mm shows plenty of promise. If you’re really on the market for a superzoom lens, then does it shape up? Is it really that good for video work? Let’s take a look!

Is there any difference in picture quality between this and the older, non stm version?

Biplav Acharya says:

Hi Chris! thanks for nice review. Would please share what are sharpest apertures for different f lengths (if you have already checked/tested)? You showed sharper images at f/8, but what about smaller apertures? Any input is much appreciated.

Hello Chris,
Thanks for your excellent review both of 18-135mm STM and USM!
Which one would you suggest me to buy between them?
By the way, I would like to upgrade soon from my old Pentax K200 to Canon T6s or T6i with one of those lenses.

Ranjit Mukherjee says:

Hi Chris, thank you so much for doing this review. I’ve got a question for you..since I’m planning to upgrade from my kit lens to a good walk around zoom, would you recommend this over Canon’s 15-85mm?
Both seem to have variable apertures with the new STM lens having a bit more reach. For me, sharpness and image quality is a priority and can’t seem to make up my mind. Please help..

Any chance we’ll be getting a review on the new Nano USM version?

Hi Cristopher, this is an awesome review. I just wonder what lens would be better for landscspe in terms of sharpness: this or the 18-55mm IS STM?

Thanks in advance, have a nice day!!!

Does this lens have the aperture wobble while zooming in video that other variable aperture lenses have?

Hyder Shah says:

is this lens good for portraits

Patrick Kreisz says:

Hi Chris,
I absolutely prefer your review. How are the chances of review of the new 18 – 135 IS USM and a comparism to the STM version?

Hi Chris, Are you gonna review the IS Nano USM version of this?

Zoe Miao says:

Hi, i just wondered would this lens work on canon eos 70d but not cropped in cause 70d is a crop camera or something – I don’t really understand cameras that well 🙁
Thank you!

Renny Gregg says:

Are this lens Canon EF-S 18-135mm can be use with full frame dslr?

HeavyHanded says:

What does IS and STM mean? EF-S is the fitting type right?

JJ's Life says:

Thanks for the review

if you would need to make a choice.

I have canon m5

If looking at lens quality, would you go for EFS 18-135mm or EFM 18-150mm?

would really appreciate if you help out with your opinion.

Thanks ahead 🙂

princeicio says:

So in a nutshell, this one has a better zoom quality than the 18-55mm lens?

GUTS says:

You have a nice voice 🙂

Eaglescout says:

Thank you Christopher, I have a 5D Markii, I just ordered the 80D mostly for Videos, I was planning to use my Canon L lens, didn’t think of zoo noise, so I just purchased this and will give it a test drive. Another nice part of Amazon, I can always return if it does not work out for me. You have a great voice and good information, thanks again.

Mike Honcho says:

so in your opinion, what is better for everyday walk around city street photography. the 15-85 usm OR 18-135 stm

Dam you sold me on this lens! Buying an 80D with this lens.

Mikail Music says:

I am planning to buy a canon 80D, would you recommend the 18-135mm STM with it ? I am new in photography, I would like something that is good all around, I also plan on having a 50mm 1/8 lens for my videos… is it a good idea ? 🙂

Pan Ko says:

Hello Chris, thanks a ton for this extremely useful video. It’s quite hard to find standardised videos.
If you wouldn’t mind my asking, how would you rate this lens against the 24-105 Mark I ? It seems that the 18-135 ATM is sharper than the 24-105 M I, but I’m finding that hard to digest.

justcallmenathalie says:

does the 18-55mm lense still have the stabilization setting?

RK LMBD says:

This lens came with my 70D a few years ago and I automatically discounted it as a cheap kit lens, preferring more expensive lenses that I own. Thing is, I kept coming back to it despite myself for its versatility. If I only want to have one lens its often this. And that’s what happened when I went on holiday recently including in my travels a friend’s wedding in exotic Goa. I intended just to take some snapshots, there was a professional on hand for formal photos. I didn’t even take a flash even though it was outdoor and at night. The lens surprised the heck out of me! IS is really really good. Dynamic range brilliant (Indian weddings are colourful!) and to my greatest surprise, because of the happy marriage of IS, wide open aperture and fairy lights I discovered that bokeh and out-of-focus is just creamy creamy creamy delicious. As distortion and CA are controlled in camera I have new respect for this lens and have returned its to its rightful place at the front of the cupboard.

Ive been waiting for months for your review on NEW 18-135mm USM….. please! 🙂
