SLR Magic 8mm F4 – Ultra Wide Angle Lens Review with Panasonic Lumix G85

This video is about the lens review about the SLR Magic 8mm F/4 ultra wide angle lens. 8mm or 16mm in full frame equivalent is very useful to capture extra view into your frame.

Focal Length: 8mm
Comparable 35mm Focal Length: 16 mm
– Maximum: F/4
– Minimum: F/16
Camera Mount Type: Micro Four Thirds
Angle of View: 140°
Minimum Focus Distance: 3.94″ (10 cm)
Elements/Groups: 9/8
Diaphragm Blades: 7

Filter Thread Front: 43 mm
Front: 52 mm
Dimensions (DxL): Approx. 1.81 x 1.63″ (46.1 x 41.4 mm)
Weight: 3.88 oz (110 g)

Things I love:
☑ Low wide angle lens distortion
☑ Lightweight and tiny, great for travelling
☑ Perform the best when set to F5.6 or F8

Things I don’t like:
🔹 The silver manual focusing nob is located in the lower right hand, need time to get used to it
🔹 Your finger might turn the aperture ring when you manually focus the lens. (because it’s extremely small)
🔹 Reduce sharpness at the corner of the frame when set at F4.

Thanks much. Nice review.

Hey Martin, Thanks for putting this together. I really appreciated the comparison of the various F stops. Your review is the only one I’ve seen that has that. I was really hoping the heavy chromatic aberration would go away when the lens was stopped down to 8 or 16, but it doesn’t look like this is the case. Thanks, your video was really helpful!

Nice review. I’m considering getting it. I did want a wider lens than the kit lens that comes with the g7.

You may want to take a look at the comparison against the 8mm from laowa

I am considering getting this lens for shooting B-Roll however I am open to other options.

Gan Eden Media says:

Looks like a commercially modified C-Mount lens.

Thanks for the review!

I think the images look a bit soft. Can you zoom in to say 400% on a photo to see the centre and corner sharpness?

Interesting to see how the in body stabilisation has a hard time dealing with this wide lens. Has your g85 been updated to the latest firmware (the ibis was improved)?

How is the lens flare?

Thank you again for the review!
