Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM lens review (with samples)

Here we have Canon’s newly-released, second ultra-wide angle lens for APS-C cameras, notable for its low price and inclusion of interesting features, such as image stabilization and STM autofocusing. The market is a little crowded with APS-C ultra-wide lens options, so can this lens’s optical ability match its handy features to become a value king on the market? Take a look and find out.

Denis Freerun says:

What would you do ? (APS-C) Sell a 10-18mm and go for the samyang 14mm 2.8. Or stay with the 10-18 ? I like to take Landscapes but not really with 10mm, and Starphotographie would be nice aswell :/ Would be really helpful, thank you!

yang mike says:

Hello, sir! Why is the sky so white when I use that lens ? I use 70d

Rozely Lindim says:

electronic manual focus actually done a great job for keeping the focus lock without accidentally override it. It is useful for mounting on tripod taking landscape..

Josh Nervi says:

Hi Christopher. Do you still think this is the best option covering this range for EF-S?

3) A little softer but still very good

It’s ok, but $260 isn’t exactly inexpensive or low price.

Stanislav Novkov says:

Jack Moseley says:

This or a Sigma 10-20mm f3.5 for photography?

Sergio Serra says:

I was thinking about this lens, but I was wondering if it would have been better to buy the Samyang 14mm (I’m on aps-C Canon 450D/Canon 50D) since I have a 17-85 IS and a 55-250 IS STM

That Girl Channel says:

can it work with a canon 1300d?

Nicholas Burns says:

I just bought this tonight, and have not yet tested it during the day. However, that being said; I love this lens! I have never used a wide angle lens on a DSLR, I used my iPhone with a “lens kit” and used the wide angle which, lets be honest wasn’t that wide at all.

I am extremely happy with this since I shoot lots of cars at car shows and car meets. I love the STM feature for filming, and I dont find the lens being that dark actually. Its not so dark that you cant use it at night. In a decently lit area it is very good. Awesome change over the stock lenses.

You can buy this lens and the EF 50MM f/1.8 combo from BestBuy for 350$, what a steal!

moonfish1967 says:

I end up just treating this as a 10mm lens. Well which is 16mm on my 7d. Very happy with it for the price. Love your reviews!

Josh Elias says:

Can I use this lens for the T7i

Javier says:

Hello, Christopher,
do you know for sure if the lens works in a Blackmagic cinema camera EF? I found diferent opinions about this and it is driving me crazy… even a salesman in a photograpy shop told me the lens wouldn’t work…

Sam Chaney says:

I’m very excited about picking up this lens! Seems like it will be great for landscapes, some semi-macro and even a few portraits.

Hello says:

Can I use this with a canon 650d?

SimsstasH says:

Thank you

Edvin Rushitaj says:

Hi Christopher. If you had to choose between this and the Samyang 14mm F2.8, which one would you choose (Canon600D body). Canon has IS & AF but is very dark and crop only. Samyang on the other hand is at the same price, full manual and can be used on FF body (if i upgrade in the future).
Please tell me your opinion
Many thnx

Hi Chris,
I have watched many of your lens reviews and bought on the back of them. I am looking to upgrade my current Tamron 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 for a more updated version. I am looking at both the Canon 10-18mm stm and the Tamron 10-24mm VC HLD. I wonder what your thoughts are on which one would be the best long term investment. I have heard that the Tamron is quite noisey on auto focus is this true and is it noticeable enough not to buy it?

The budget on either one is not the issue for me, it is the usefulness and will I be dissapointed/like it. I do a lot of Landscape and architectural photography so the wide angle is on my camera 90% of the time, so i know that a wide angle is what I want. I am pairing it with my 70d. I also considered the Sigma 8-16mm rectalinear wide angle lens, but I am not sure about the distortion at the edges which is what I am getting with my current Tamron wide open.

Would ppreciate your thoughts, thank you

300 cheap for you you must have very good job

Rich Weatherly says:

Thanks for your informative review. I purchased this lens in early December and first impression is quite favorable. Today I checked the firmware version for my Canon T3i and learned Canon has a new one so I updated the firmware. There was an update but it did not offer correction for this lens.
That said, Adobe Lightroom has a profile and it seems to offer good correction. Even so, the needed correction is minimal.

AlanaRiley says:

So, the autofocus feature makes no noise, and autofocuses completely by itself? I am hoping that i can use this lens for my youtube videos.

Malachi Viloria says:

to be honest not having a large zoom really isn’t a problem if you are taking wides Verses if you were taking a long shot

Yash Pradhan says:

about to buy this? the question is this good on a crop sensor camera like 750d?
