Mitakon Speedmaster 50mm f/0.95 ‘Pro’ lens review with samples (Full-frame & APS-C)

I’m indulging myself here with a review of a lens I’ve wanted to get my hands on for a while – the fastest aperture full-frame camera lens I have ever tested. Only for Sony’s mirrorless E-mount cameras (and as such, not adaptable onto digital SLRs), this lens can yield very dramatic images, for a reasonable price. Let’s see if the image quality can possibly keep up. By the way, this is /not/ the same lens as the SLR Magic 50mm f/0.95 – they’re made by different companies, and have different optics (and the Mitakon lens is a lot less expensive).

All pictures taken by me on a Sony a7r ii and A5100 cameras.

Can you compare this to the Voigtlander 85mm f/1.2. I know they’re different, but the reason I mentioned it is because it has an enormous exit pupil so is able to transmit even more light to the sensor! I plan on getting one w/ a Sony A7 II for landscapes and astro.

Tim Broers says:

I have a Canon 50mm f/1.0L I’d be willing to lend to you. However I live in the Netherlands, near Amsterdam. And I can’t exactly say I visit the UK often.

pkilla617 says:

Do you still use this lens

MasterBata says:

I’d buy that for my canon 5d. I don’t get why a fully manual 3rd party lens with no electronics whatsoever should be released with only Sony mount.

Personally, I love those flares! Don’t you care about what your Mom says Christopher – disobedience is freedom!

Hi, Chris. I sent email to your Flickr account but it seems not read, so here I left message to ask your review on my request in Flick mail. Thanks and have a nice day  :- )

JSarmat86 says:

Hi, Chris! Great review as always! Please, could You do an review of Mitakon Creator 35 mm f/2? That lens looks nice, has an affordable price tag, but i’m not sure about it’s image quality. It would be awesome if You could do an review of that lens. Is that posible? Thank You in advance!

Linas Vaičiukynas says:

Bought this lens. It is fun to use, but I dont really like the rendering of the background, I feel like it lacks character it is too smooth for my taste. Some old vintage 1.2f lenses have more interesting bokeh. But the cost for that is far less image quality wide open compared to mitakon.
It is sharp if you can focus good.
I think this lens will hold its value far better compared to the modern canon 50mm 1.0f or 1.2f because mitakon features mechanical aperture and focus control, while the canon fully automatic and that means it is too dependent on the canon mount and body system.

Mariban says:

Thanks for your videos. Your voice is so clear and sympathetic, there are hardly any other videos in english that are so easy to understand for non-native speakers. Thumbs up!

One of my favorite lenses

Dave Andrews says:

Great video! Can I ask you how you worked out the T-Stop Value?

Miguel Pi says:

I guess is no longer availbale

Oxidator says:

I drooled over this lens for about a year now and finally ordered mine a few moments ago.
Can’t wait to get my hands on it.

Aulden Carter says:

Speedbooster?

Jody Bruchon says:

In the future, could you put a few time index numbers in the description for specific tests, especially the sharpness tests? It seems that most “alternative” lenses with wide apertures have softness issues fully open and I’d like to see those tests without seeking like a nut.

Austris Photo says:

How U test T-stop?

Bubu Souliya says:

i think it’s alot better than 7artisan 50 1.1

The Building Sheriff says:

“My mum would kill me” – I love it!

matteo gallo says:

It doesn’t make sense to test sharpness of this kind of lenses against a flat “subject”. You have to take field curvature into account.

BruTTi ProJect says:

do it go to sony a6000

SupraWes says:

It’s odd the performance is so poor on APS-C, the pixel pitch is very similar between the two.

LucisPictor says:

Another great review. Thanks.
And congratulations on your new A7RII.

taz24787 says:

Wide open nothing seems in focus.

mhs vz says:

Interesting lens. Thank you.

Mahesh Gogtay says:

This mitakon is magical… the only reason I did not keep was its weight compared with the ZM sonnar 50. I found zeiss was much easier to carry and has fantastic rendering – different to mitakon.

Robert Lee says:

The sharpness of this lens at wide open is at least ok or maybe more accurately, desirable. Btw, at least a fair part of the ‘softness’ some guys experienced is actually caused by their own movement along the axial direction of the lens – the depth of field at 0.95 is incredibly shallow at close distance.

Alejandro Bohorquez says:

Great analysis

A. says:

which settings did you use for uploading the video?
looks great without artifacting. even 100mb bitrate cant save my videos

Everton Porter says:

2.30 LOL!

MohondhaY says:
