Tamron SP 90mm f/2.8 VC USD Macro F017 lens review with samples (Full-frame & APS-C)

Here is the latest version of Tamron’s popular, full-frame, image-stabilized macro lens. Let’s see where any improvements do and do not lie.

All pictures taken by me on Canon 6D, and Sony a7R II and Canon EOS M3 cameras.

Allan Madsen says:

Nice review .. I bought the canon 100mm f2.8 is L macro lens and i must say i love it for my home studio portrait and head shot photography

cole ache says:

F/4 on the a7R ii was surprisingly good.

Notgazo says:

I kept mine only 3 days because of its autofocus performance in live view and its big view shifting in the viewfinder when vc activates.
My body is a Canon 80D with DPAF in live view so it should works well…
 It can be seen here:

Mak Siu Lung says:

nice video !
This lens not as sharp as the sigma 70mm macro ‘art’ lens but still great !
Can you also review the sigma macro 105mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM ?
Its a bit old but i think it worth a try !

Johnny Sistonen says:

would really whant to see a tokina 100mm macro review its even cheaper and i Think it smokes tamron 90mm in microcontrast and bokeh

Paolo Picariello says:

Great video really enjoy your contents. Did you test the sony 90 mm f2.8 macro g ? Which of the two fits better an high resolution camera like the a7r3?

Mark Astorga says:

Wont work on my new Z6 with FTZ adapter. Needs firmware update and tamron is dragging there feet. They’ve updated a lot of there other lenses for Nikon’s Z cameras . Tamron get with it !

Maxi VL says:

top macro lenses pls (?

syousef says:

My experiences with the older non-stabilized version of the lens cemented my distrust of all Tamron lenses. I went through 2 second hand copies before finally buying a 3rd brand new. That copy was severely backfocused and that I was only able to make use of it for non-macro work when I moved on to bodies that have AF Fine tune. Autofocus was unusable on a D90 body and because I bought it grey market Tamron in Australia wouldn’t look at it instead suggesting I ship it back to where I bought it from. I did buy a copy for my Canon bodies as well, second hand at $150. The photographer selling it was fed up with inconsistent autofocus for portraiture, which has been my experience too on both Nikon and Canon bodies. It’s a shame because when it nailed focus it was nice, but you might get 2 shots out of 3 with near perfect technique. This new version may be better but it is also much pricier which makes it less appealing.

John Dyke says:

Considering only $150 diff on price, which is the better lens: this or the Canon 100mm?

Mike Bell says:

Outstanding review, as always. Did you happen to check for longitudinal chromatic aberration on this lens? Thank you.

Team Hazardous says:

What adapter do you use on your Sony camera for Canon lenses? Do you like it the performance of the autofocus or other features?

p gh says:

Great video, what adapter do you use for mounting your lenses on your sony a7r II? Any drawbacks by using an adapter?

Florian Lica says:

Please HELP … I just bought a new Tamron 90mm … and when i am shaking the Lens ,it has some sound… rettles. Is that normal? i posted one video with this noise. Thank you

B.- C. says:

Hi, can you recommend your Canon 6D? I am planning to buy a not so expencive Fullframe DSLR.

rendezvous009 says:

The only lens that can compete is the Tokina 100mm macro. If you want the best VC, must get this 90mm macro.

Amir Siraj says:

Can you please make a comparison video of this lens with the Canon 100mm f2.8L IS USM Macro?

Celeste Aeron says:

Hi. Bit of a mix up with the image and designation you’ve used for the older version of this lens. The image you’ve used is for the more recent F004 version (2012/2013) which doesn’t have an AF designation (just SP), which replaced the older (2008-ish) 272E version which had the AF designation.

Aleksandr Samoilov says:

When 20mpix is low res feels bad man 🙁 Love your reviews !

Ali Alkoot says:

Hey, I decided to get a new lens for my canon dslr and I can’t decide whether to get the canon 85 f1.8 and fix my canon 18-55mm kit lens, or to get sigma’s af 17-50mm f2.8 dc os hsm, I have a budget for one lens only.
Which one do you think would be the better choice?

Behnam Bagherzadeh says:

Pls do a review about this lens vs Canon 100 mm L series

Jason Under The Sun says:

I may be the only view to know that was John 1 at the end there 😉

PLVLOG says:

Your reviews are some of the best on Youtube!

Djuy Doiu says:

the thing is the that lenses between 75-135 got a good angle to work with light
they useally high charted also the light rays fit more to the bend calculations glass and physics professors can do or form at the moment
unless phones classical wide angle lenses lower then 35 mm have it harder to bend the light rightly special for the corners chromatic and sharpness lose are often the case again special for the corners

Bruno Fernandes says:

Always nice videos.
