I forgot to mention this lens’s price: €350 / £319 (approx. $350 US).
I also forgot to say “thank you” to Samyang for providing a sample of this lens for testing – although, as usual, this is a totally independent review.
Here’s something I haven’t seen before: an 85mm lens just for APS-C cameras. It’s clearly a intended as a classic portrait lens – let’s see how it performs. It will be available for Sony E, Fuji X, Canon EOS M and Micro 4/3 mounts.
By the way, this review is not sponsored by Samyang or Marumi or anyone else! I just love this lens, hehe (even though it’s not perfect).

Have you tried it on your A7R II and, if so, how was the vignetting?
Would love to have 135mm f2 small lens for aps-c instead to use as travel size 200mm telephoto lens.
Price?
Would the 1.5x factor apply to the focal length and f-stop even though it is made for APSC bodies?
Almost a perfect lens actually! Great review as always 🙂
After the 35/1.2 was released I emailed Samyang and suggested this as the perfect lens to round out the set, though they did me one better at 1.8 rather than the f2 I recommended for a compact ‘135’.
And, true to form, the IQ in this lens is very nearly superb. I am very excited to get this one in my bag.
Great review. Thanks 🙂
I actually really like the rainbow flare.
Why would anybody consider this lens, when you get for 100€ more the excellent Sony FE85 with autofocus.
But i guess since it’s a Samyang lens you‘ll say it’s worth it….
Great review sir, I’m greatly thankful to you for reviewing Sony FE 16-35 few days ago. A lots love and well wishing for you from Bangladesh , God bless you
is manual?
I was looking for a compact telefoto lens for landscape a bit but, might got kinda serious right now..
Yo.. 5th here
I’m new subscriber, your videos are awesome! Please keep it up
I hope Samyang will send you the new 85mm 1.4 AF for canon!
Could you test it on a FF sony a7? Considering that the 21mm f1.4, 35mm f1.2 and 50mm f1.2 lenses cover full frame sensor without a lot of vignetting, it would be nice to know how this one behaves. Great video!
What is the big difference between this lens and the other Samyang 85mm F1.4?
Very thrilling lens for me as I can now complete my Samyang Aps-c line set. Wonderful. Very nice of you to compare it with the Sony 85 1.8. Great review, as always! Thanks.
I am so glad to see they did not abandon this line up. I hope they make a 16mm f1.8 version. Do you have plans to test their 21mm F1.4 and 35mm F1.2 versions? I hear they are really good. Keep up the good work.
Great for fuji system…almost all fuji lenses are overpriced for an apsc lens.
Great review! Please don’t forget other samyang lenses for aps-c mirrorles, like the 21mm f1.4, I’ve been waiting for that review for a long time ☹️
It does looks really good
Hi I love your camera gears review videos it is short and sweet, you cover the important descriptions and testing results of the gear. Some people talk too much and make us bored.
Don’t actually need this focal lens, but it looks amazing !
Another great review. Top man. Regards Si.
No 85mm APS-C mirrorless lens? Fuji has an 80mm f/2.8 macro and a 90mm f/2 lenses. They are pricey, and not exactly 85 mm, but 5 mm at telephoto distances don’t make that much of a difference.
Oh, and Samsung had a 85mm f1.4. Anyone remembered they released a mirrorless camera before Sony?
Good for apsc users but a waste of time for m43 users when you look at the olympus 75mm f1.8 with af which is razor sharp and has nice bokeh. It can also be bought second hand.
Good and precise review as usual. But do you think you could introduce focus breathing in your future tests? As that kind of lense produce an heavy bokeh and can be used for video, it’s a huge point to me.
The price is too much, the Samyang 85 1.4 for Sony is only $259 at b&h but great review as always! I just noticed i haven’t subscribed yet. SUBSCRIBED!
Thanks.
Great review as always! (PS.: Your wife is like an idealized CG character from a japanese video game.)
hope you do the samyang af 85 f1.4..great review as always..
